I had literally just found a 7 of diamonds in a street gutter during my morning run when, ten minutes later, I popped into the Salvation Army on Atlantic Ave. between Nevins St. and Bond St. And guess what I saw randomly tucked away by the cash register?…

7 of Diamonds, 8 of Hearts, Unknown #1, 2 of Hearts, 2 of Clubs, 3 of Spades, Ace of Hearts, Unknown #2 (in that order)
On a stroll to Runyan Canyon Park in L.A. with a friend, I spotted the 7 of Diamonds on N. Fuller Ave. just off Sunset Blvd. A few feet later, I saw the 8 of Hearts, then Unknown #1 - and on and on as we climbed further up Fuller. I didn’t have my cell phone on me, so my friend snapped these shots.
On our way out of the park, we spotted Paris Hilton. Didn’t get a photo of her, tho…

So, I’ve been debating with myself since I launched this tumblr as to what exactly constitutes a “found playing card.” The original idea was to use traditional suited cards that were found in the flush - sorry, flesh. <—- A little playing card humor for ya…. Heh.
So, why did I post this if it’s clearly not a “qualifier?”
Well… I believe finding these playing cards is a lesson in awareness for me on many levels… And, I have noticed a pattern re: when I tend to spot them. FYI - I’ve found well over 100 cards since I started this exercise (I only recently chose to start documenting them online).
Without reading too much into it, I usually find cards shortly after (or during) a significant event (however large or small). As such, I have come to consider these found playing cards “markers” that illuminate things/events/people that deserve my attention.

Anyway, I happened to have spotted this particular photo of a playing card within a greeting card right after finishing two back-to-back meetings that were (each in their own regard) momentous and particularly soul-satisfying.
The card was in a display case tucked in the back corner of a cupcake shop amidst other misc. bric-a-brac. The image struck a chord. The timing of “the find” seemed apropos. So, here it is. :)
Enjoy…

4 of Diamonds
I received my very first photo of a found playing card from someone else today. :)
Ada (age 5) spotted this 4 of diamonds on the ground at 3rd avenue and 38th street in Manhattan. She picked it up and gave it to my friends, Stephanie and Andy, while they were gazing up at the Chrystler building.
Ada had no idea this blog existed, but Andy and Steph did, so they happily took a snap shot of the found card and sent it along to me.

NYC Subway 1/9 uptown local train - Sitting on the subway, heading uptown (from Franklin Street) I was telling a colleague (seated next to me) about my Found Playing Cards collection and how excited I was that I had recently found a 5 of hearts on a Manhattan brownstone’s stoop.
She smiles as she pulls this Queen of Spades out of her wallet - she had randomly been drawn to pick it up when she found it on a street while in Brazil the week prior to meeting me. Not a direct find - but I think it definitely counts! ;)

About:

A colleague showed me a collection of playing cards randomly found throughout the streets of NYC over the years. As soon as he told me about his playing card collection, I immediately started finding them, too.

I've since picked up every playing card I've found - in all corners of the world.

Now, in addition to picking up the cards I find, I'm taking pictures of them and plotting their coordinates on a google map (check out the Found Playing Cards Map link to your right).

After seeing this blog, maybe you'll start finding playing cards, too.

Submit your found playing card pics and the addresses of where you found them, and I'll put 'em up on the blog.

Maybe we can get a round of gin rummy going. :)
